What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the conscious awareness of a sound that is not due to an external source and affects about 1 in 8 of the population. Tinnitus is rarely a sign of a serious underlying condition. For some people it may come and go and only be a minor irritation. However, it can sometimes be continuous and have a significant impact on everyday life.

The Effects of Tinnitus

Tinnitus can affect sleep, concentration, motivation, confidence, self-esteem, stress, anxiety, fear and isolation.

At Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Tinnitus Support Group, volunteers understand how people feel and can help them manage those symptoms. Speaking to one of their lay counsellors who experiences tinnitus can help.

How the group can help

  • Feel empowered and in control.
  • Get a good night’s sleep.
  • Learn relaxation techniques.
  • Reduce anxiety and improve concentration.
  • Introduce personalised management techniques.
  • Improve health and wellbeing while learning to habituate to tinnitus.

Our Service

The charitable service is run entirely by volunteers. On first contact with the group, many people describe feeling a tremendous sense of relief that they can speak to someone who will help them manage the condition.

As well as providing advice and information about tinnitus, the group is there to listen. Talking to someone about anxieties or distress caused by tinnitus can be therapeutic in itself.

  • One-to-one lay counselling support from a group member who experiences tinnitus.
  • Information booklets about managing tinnitus.
  • Group meetings, peer support and social meetings.
  • Support completing audiology self-referrals for anyone aged over 55 with hearing difficulties.

Meetings dates for 2026

  • Tuesday 21st July: Hearing Help UK talk including display of hearing support equipment.
  • Tuesday 22nd September: Tim Buckle, Chimp Management – understanding emotions.
  • Tuesday 24th November: Talking Tinnitus, stress/anxiety, questions and answers session.
  • Tuesday 8th December: Preparing for a stress-free Christmas period – Mindfulness, to be confirmed.
